For
Nolet, becoming a visual artist was the answer to self discovery and
self expression. His first step was acquiring the skills and vocabulary
in painting, which culminated in a degree from the University of the
Philippines, College of Fine Arts, in 1998. There, he learned the
basics and the foundation to ready and brave the Philippine Art scene
as an exhibiting artist, and eventually becoming faculty at the
University of the Philippines, Baguio in Visual Arts and Humanities for
3 years. In 2003-2005, Nolet left his teaching post for a study grant
at the Academia di Belle Arti, Florence, Italy. One can only imagine
how much this has influenced and has enriched his person as an artist.
Journeys
such as these are transforming. Now, we find an artist who continues to
be overwhelmingly passionate and with such unrelenting conviction to
his art, to life. He continues to draw, paint and create sculpture
works every single day and night on every possible material—paper
scraps and cigarette wrappers included—and most often whilst listening
and singing to Beethoven’s 9th. In the harsh busy city environment
of Manila, Nolet has found a haven, an inner peace for his art to flow
from; his parents’ garden and upstairs suite have been transformed in
many ways to encompass his work studio. A serene space where his
creative inspirations can be captured on canvas. And always close by,
are his wife--Tosh, and their children, Joaquin and Ode, who give him
purpose, strength and reason.

The Art |
|
| |
Art
is a revelation. It begins with a blank piece of paper. A pencil, a
brush is held and an image is created. As the process begins, "I am
filled with excitement and anticipation. My mind thinks of nothing but
the possibility of what my hands are capable of revealing at the
moment".
The work slowly
unveils perhaps a play of colors with bold angry strokes, or that of a
human body posed in longing solitude in a quiet space. In art, one
finds a voice, ones own voice, in finding a way to speak of new ideas.
It is also a way of finding new ways to speak of familiar things
forgotten. This is my art, which I hope another will view, to
experience and to converse with.
