ArtsCura is the Grant Administrator for the Flight of the Jade Bird.

The Arts Creation Fund (ACF) is a new initiative by the National Arts Council in Singapore, that provides artists with resources to support artistic works in the germination phase. ArtsCura administered the ACF grant awarded to Mark Chan in 2010 that enabled the research, writing and composition that led to creation of The Flight of the Jade Bird.

The Flight of the Jade Bird is a newly commissioned work for the 2012 Singapore Arts Festival, created by Mark Chan. Part concert, part opera, part story-telling this musical treat tightly interwoven with dance features a galaxy of stars from Singapore and Hong Kong. Performances were held on 18th and 19th May 2012 at the Esplanade Concert Hall.

  About the Artist
Mark Chan is one of Singapore’s premier composers. A Singer/Multi-instrumentalist/Poet and Painter in his own right, his unique combination of East and West shows in the fact that he trained for 9 years in classical Chinese bamboo flute and also 7 years as a Western Counter-tenor.

His musical career spans a good 19 years and is surprising for its constant freshness and reinvention of a very distinctive style established back in the 80s and refined and matured up til the present day.

It is a seamless thoroughly integrated blend of Asian and Western, traditional and modern, classical, pop and avant-garde that always retains its primal beauty through his distinctive and memorable melodies and his cutting harmonies.
